10 trends for a baby girl’s nursery in 2018

Autumn has us all feeling the nesting urge, and no-one more so than the nesting mother-to-be! At this time there is so much joy and delight in setting up the perfect baby’s room.
And if you know you’re having a girl, you’ll probably already be bursting with ideas on how to decorate her very first room.
If you’re looking for more inspiration however, here are some of the top trends for a baby girl’s nursery predicted to be huge this year in 2018 (you can also view last year’s list) as some of these are still going strong, too).
- Girl power
You have probably seen the meme: “Here’s to strong women: May we know them, may we be them, may we raise them”. And if you’re determined to raise an empowered female, why not sing it from the rooftops—or at least, the nursery.
Bold statements and encouraging messages act as affirmations, even before your baby girl can read, by creating positive vibes for everyone who enters her room.
Slogans like “The future is female” and “Who run the world? Girls!” are intended to inspire us to look to the female archetype for alternative forms of leadership, asking what we can learn from the female energy around us.
Harness that sentiment with framed prints of empowering statements, images of feminist icons, and stacks of bedtime reading books like “Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls”.

- Surfer girl
She lives for Vitamin Sea (or her parents do, and she undoubtedly will). She has an old, battered surfboard in the corner of her room, plenty of bamboo and cane, pot plants and there’s the lingering scent of frangipani.
Cushions on a velvet armchair proclaim “Make waves not war” and “Love is an island”; there’s a peace sign draped on the wall, palm tree feature wallpaper and through it all, soft sun kissed hues.
A beachy-keen theme that’s quintessentially Australian: laid-back, chilled, comfy.

- She’s like a rainbow
Multicoloured everything is surely one of the happiest nursery themes ever for a girls room, and it continues to be hugely popular in 2018. It’s also one of the easiest DIY nursery themes there is, and there is plenty of nursery craft inspiration in this regard.
Bring this theme to life in an instant by designing your very own rainbow-hued felt ball rug.

- Earth goddess
A love of all things natural and all creatures great and small comes to life in a nursery theme that celebrates Gaia, Mother Nature and a beautifully simple, grounded childhood.
Natural colour palettes and rustic textures feature, with textiles made of pure and natural fibres—wool, cotton, silk and felt—always a sensory delight for babies.
For playtime, fill the nursery with wooden dollhouses, naturalistic tiny native and woodland animals.

- Female superheroes
Caped crusaders aren’t just for boys—there are plenty of female action heroes to inspire your little baby girl. After all, which girl doesn’t love dressing up as Wonder Woman? Stimulate her imagination with a room inspired by the female characters in the Marvel and DC universes (and beyond), adding little ‘comic book’ touches (such as framed “KA-POW!” prints) and pop art styling. One thing’s for sure, she’ll never suffer a Dark Knight in this nursery!

- Magical garden
This is a perennial nursery trend for girl's room: after all, enchantment, faeries and wonder are the traditional mainstays of girlhood, even into 2018.
Whether it is a pretty floral feature wall or wall art stencils or some sculptural 3D floral elements, flowers and greenery are the basic building blocks of this theme—then add whimsy.
A tiny faery door, little mushroom stools, a sprinkling of twinkling lights, a felt ball garland and other similarly ethereal elements will create a place of magical mystery for your sweet little girl.

- Eclectic modern
How cool are these customised neon name signs? Make your baby girl the star with her name up in lights on a feature wall, find a stunningly unique cot (whether contemporary or a rare vintage find as seen here), then pare back the rest of the nursery styling to achieve a minimalist look.
Take advantage of advances in technology and the Internet of things to introduce some high-tech smart luxury into her room, whether it’s programming a HomePod to set up the perfect lullaby playlist or to set up sleep-enhancing lighting changes.
(We’re not sure if “Hey Siri, please--for the love of God just make her go to sleep!” works, but it’s surely worth a try?)

- Boho chic
The much-loved boho chic trend shows no signs of getting tired and it’s so easy to create a gorgeous, Bohemian, hippie-flavoured hangout for your free-spirited little gypsy.
Begin with layers of colourful patterned textiles over a base of simple, modern furniture. Then add the liberal use of embellishments and adornments (think handmade wall décor, tassels, fringing, pompoms, ribbons, leather, crystals, faux fur and feathers).
You’ll often see teepees, driftwood and painted antlers pop up in boho chic nurseries, or items such as velvet poufes and ottomans.

- Nostalgic vintage
In keeping with the trend towards vintage girls’ names (“Esme”, “Olive”, “Frankie”, etc), some parents are embracing a very nostalgic vintage vibe, with traditional nursery décor that harks back to a bygone, more innocent era.
Modern materials mix with old-fashioned charm to create a classical, warmly appealing space. Base the theme around pieces of beautiful antique furniture and add in items such as Grandma’s crocheted throw, lace curtains, childhood favourite Golden Books, vintage dolls, tin toys or a wooden rocking horse to create an olde-worlde feel.
This theme is such fun—try scouring op shops, Gumtree and Ebay to find unique vintage items on a budget.

- African Queen
Not all girls want to be princesses: some want to be queens. OK, so reigning Queen Beyoncé and her Bey Hive may be slightly to blame for that, but nevertheless, little girls the world over are getting in formation and having their bedrooms styled to evoke the beauty of Africa, its heritage, culture, people and landscape.
Whether it’s safari animal prints (zebras, giraffes, lions) or splashes of leopard soft furnishings, mix it all in with plenty of natural greenery and wood, and add gold metallic accents. Slay, baby, slay.
